DFU – Water Live 水里

Originally from Guangzhou, the Xiamen-based DJ began his musical exploration as a part of the earliest Chinese underground hip-hop collectives/movement Deearna and Dumdue. While running Thank You Café in Xiamen, a creative hub that has connected countless souls, DFU also captures listeners’ ears with his onliest improvised performing approach using sampler, loop station, turntable manipulating collected sounds, melodies, and rhythms across the globe. Besides working with the local electronic trio 44, DFU has also been collaborating with many prominent creators to break boundaries, ranging from sculpturer Sheng Jiang to fashion brand SANKUANZ.

In 2019, the Shanghai-based artist Nathan Zhou held his exhibition “Nathan’s Road” in Guangzhou. As the guest sound curator and Nathan’s long-term collaborator, DFU offered us a daydream with his unique music style and improvised performance. The 3-hour recording was later edited into the 8-track album “Water Live”.

Sampled from an audio book for children from the1970s, the repeated vocal sample “Water” appears throughout the entire album. Within this journey guided by DFU, ethereal sounds and voices collide and communicate with each other. Different elements are blended like flowing water and poured out through the artist’s body creating a resonance with audience. The progression of subtle percussive rhythms delivers a vivid image slowly soaked by water droplets. Samples and melodies are twisted and reconstructed with loop station and hazy effects, feels like the breath of all things at dawn. Deliberately deviated from the atmosphere of the nowadays society, DFU’s soundscape leads the likeminded ears into a state of deep relaxation. The appearance of eastern musical instruments is like the whisper of a troubadour, full of emotion and energy. The sounds of udu, shakuhachi, and gambang kayu outline the trajectory of our history and cultures. With futuristic sound effects shuttle through each mysterious melody, climaxing one after another, DFU transcend the shackles of the past and the present bridging the East and the West.

広州出身、現在は厦門を拠点に活動するDJ DFU は、中国初期のアンダーグラウンド・ヒップホップ・ムーブメント／コレクティブ Deearna と Dumdue の一員として音楽活動をスタートしました。

厦門でカルチャースペース Thank You Café を運営する傍ら、サンプラー、ループステーション、ターンテーブルを用いた即興演奏を展開。世界各地で収集した音やメロディ、リズムを自在に組み合わせながら、その場限りのサウンドスケープを生み出しています。また、電子音楽トリオ 44 のメンバーとして活動するほか、彫刻家 Sheng Jiang やファッションブランド SANKUANZ など、さまざまな分野のクリエイターとのコラボレーションも行っています。

2019年、上海を拠点に活動するアーティスト Nathan Zhou が広州で個展 「Nathan’s Road」 を開催しました。長年のコラボレーターであり、本展のサウンド・キュレーターを務めたDFUは、自身ならではの即興演奏によって会場に夢のような音の風景を描き出しました。その約3時間に及ぶ演奏は、後に編集され、8曲入りのアルバム 『Water Live』 としてまとめられています。

1970年代の子ども向けオーディオブックからサンプリングされた「Water」という声が、アルバム全体を通して繰り返し現れます。DFUが導くこの音の旅では、浮遊感のある音色や声が交錯し、互いに呼応しながら、一つの流れを形づくっていきます。

さまざまな音の断片は、水が流れるように溶け合い、アーティストの身体を通して響きとなり、聴き手との共鳴を生み出します。繊細なパーカッションのリズムは、水滴がゆっくりと染み込んでいくような情景を描き出し、ループステーションとエフェクトによって再構築されたサンプルやメロディは、夜明けの静かな呼吸を思わせます。

現代社会の喧騒からあえて距離を置くように紡がれるDFUのサウンドスケープは、聴く者を深い静けさへと導きます。そこに現れる東洋の楽器は、旅する吟遊詩人のささやきのように、豊かな感情と生命力を宿しています。ウドゥ、尺八、ガンバン・カユの響きは、それぞれの歴史や文化の軌跡を描き出し、未来的なサウンドエフェクトがその旋律の間を行き交うことで、過去と現在、東洋と西洋を越えて新たな音の風景を築き上げています。
