Sleeping Dogs, nehcetep – Petedogs

Sleeping Dogs, a band wins the reputation by almost word of mouth. They appear to be sloppy while indeed put the most earnest effort to make music, always presenting what’s beyond expectations. nehcetep, a rather shy producer, whose image has been dimmed by too many aliases, left only with his work including some lo-fi cassettes and vinyl records. It’s hard to tell if anyone really knows him. The collaboration of the EP “Petedogs” was urged by Eating Music back in 2019. By then Sleeping Dogs was only recognized by few listeners on streaming platform Xiami and fRUITYSPACE in Beijing, having several demos recorded. Eating Music suggested nehcetep to make remix tracks for them, hoping to bring the band out in that summer. Being put off till now, while with no harm, tracks “Spring of Rio”, “Kweichow”, and “Homeless Dog” have been improved for better recording and making with growing experiences. ahmooow, friend of nehcetep’s, was invited to play saxophone for remix / edit tracks. The record label needs no worry about the sales anymore to release vinyl records, thriving for everyone. The record design achieves excellence by the delay. Releasing specially designed 10″ vinyl records and pressing six tracks to be small but sophisticated. All the effort is finally paid back in full, and the spring is being joyful.

The Making of EP: In the summer of 2019, band members squeezed in the tiny basement for rehearsal. A Yong from Future Orients recorded and roughly mixed track 1-3 for Sleeping Dogs. After moving, a few more audio tracks were added. These three tracks should be the very first studio recordings by Sleeping Dogs. nehcetep made remix for tracks 4-6, took over a year to finish while those should be done in 2019.

Sleeping Dogs is an instrumental band from Beijing. Influenced by all kinds of grooving styles, blending different elements into their instrumental performance. nehcetep, mysterious + decadent + inconspicuous, living causally but hoping to turn better. ahmooow, a 24-year-old boy who learns saxophone himself and takes Wayne Shorter, Pharoah Sanders as models.

Sleeping Dogsは、ほぼ口コミだけで評判を築いたバンドです。彼らは一見だらしなく見えることもありますが、実際には最も真摯な努力を重ねて音楽を制作しており、常に期待以上の表現を目指しています。

一方、nehcetepは、あまり表に出てこないシャイなプロデューサーです。多くの別名を持ち、そのイメージは曖昧になっていますが、彼の作品にはローファイのカセットテープやレコードなどがあります。誰も彼を本当に知っているのかはわかりません。

このEP『Petedogs』のコラボレーションは、2019年にEating Musicから提案されました。その頃、Sleeping DogsはストリーミングプラットフォームのXiamiや北京のfRUITYSPACEで数人のリスナーに認知されているだけで、いくつかのデモ録音を行っていました。Eating Musicは、nechcetepにリミックス曲を作成させ、夏にバンドをより多くの人に知ってもらいたいと考えました。しかし、その計画は長らく保留されていましたが、問題はなく、“Spring of Rio”、“Kweichow”、“Homeless Dog”の各トラックは、より良いレコーディングと経験を積むことで改良されました。

また、nechcetepの友人であるahmooowは、リミックス/エディット曲のサックス演奏に招かれました。レコードレーベルはもはや売上の心配をせずに、ヴァイナルレコードのリリースに向けて準備を進めており、誰もが楽しめる作品となっています。

このレコードのデザインは、制作遅延によって真価を発揮しました。特にデザインされた10インチのレコードをリリースし、わずか6曲ながらも洗練された仕上がりになっています。
